This Pictorial Directory is prepared as a special service of our Church's Ministry and is in honor of all United Methodists in Mattawamkeag. The United Methodist Church in Mattawamkeag is not the building but the people who live the love of Jesus Christ both in church programs and in everyday life.
The Church is People, the people are pictured in this Directory as seen with their families and in positions of leadership. And the Church at work is these people in action.
This Pictorial Directory will serve as an Act of History for the United Methodist Church in Mattawamkeag, and I pray that each time we turn these pages we will thank God for the Church for those who called Christians.

A History of Our Church
Proposals to build the present church structure began in May, 1879 with the purchase of a lot of land. It was proposed at that time “to build at once”.
Construction on the church building was begun following the approval given by the East Maine Conference Session of 1879. Construction was continued for four years until the building's completion in the Fall of 1883. (This extended building period was due to a shortage of funds.) The Dedication was held in January of 1884.
Since the time of construction, a basement and an addition have been added to the present structure. This took place in 1961.
Other church improvements have included basement and back room panelling, carpeting and interior redecorating in the Sanctuary and exterior painting.
It is hoped that additional painting and redecoration will take place in the near future.
