As the evolution of My Adventures with Google Maps continues…. This idea has dawned on me: In addition to doing taking pictures, doing reviews, and finding stories, I want to create a type of business directory of each community I visit. Some might ask, “Why are you re-inventing the wheel?” Which is a good point. We have Google for that not mention most Chamber of Commerce's have some sort of online directory. My response:
Google does a fine job, heck, their name is in the title of this blog. But they are a massive company, and they are doing it from a global level trying to build downward. If that makes sense. I mean, they send out a car with a camera on it. And they don’t always get it right, I know, after a year doing this, I’ve found many mistakes. I want to go to the actual places, walk in, interact with live people. Plus, the stories! I’m sure the omni-directional camera on top of the google bug captures some stories but I bet it misses a lot more. Many Chamber of Commerce really nail their local directory. Ellsworth’s comes to mind, they do a great job. But most are limited in what they do. And in many places, especially in Northern Maine there are no chambers, all the businesses there could use the extra support, IMO. That’s it for this week. I’m going to start my directory and kick it off with the Mattawamkeag Area. ‘Keag’s my home town so it’s going to be fun. The first group will include the surrounding towns: Medway, Woodville, Chester, Winn, Lee, Springfield, Kingman and Macwahoc. As I was developing this idea of a “Google Maps” Blog, I took a lot of pictures during 2018. Everywhere I went I took pictures and gathered information for reviews. Driving the people I went to breakfast, lunch or dinner with crazy: “Nobody touch their food till I get pictures of it!”
Asking 1001 questions of the servers/workers/other customers of EVERY place we went. Lots of fun. Looking forward to doing a lot more this year. So from time to time here at the MaG Blog, I’m going to do some house cleaning and post some pictures and preliminary reviews of places I visited in 2018. I haven’t finished their full reviews yet, but my works-in-progress box is YUUGE! Here’s the first three: Abby’s Attic Thrift Store in Orland. I’m still trying to catch this place open. I know it’s winter time and so cold here in Maine, the whole state is pretty much frozen shut. But the place is so funky looking on the outside, I really can’t wait to see what’s inside. Acadia Village Resort in Ellsworth. My family has been coming here for years. I hate the word “Staycation”, but unfortunately in today’s economy it has become reality for many Americans. Plus the entire area is great and there is plenty to do. Still working on the Full review. Adams School in Castine. Built in 1861, this historical building is still functioning schoolhouse today. Incredible. I plan on digging into the school’s history this summer and doing some story-hunting. That’s it for my first 2018 “Clean-up”, I just wanted to mention the Ellsworth DQ Grill & Chill full review is done. (As much as any of my writing is ever done, I’m always “tweaking” stuff, one of the advantages and curses of the Internet I guess.) Also, I went to a GREAT little Bar/Pub in Millinocket last night called the Sawmill Bar and Grill. That’s going to be fun review for me to do personally as it is located in a building that used to be a gas station where I had my first real job over 30 years ago. Cheers Everyone! Enjoy your day! |
