As the evolution of My Adventures with Google Maps continues…. This idea has dawned on me: In addition to doing taking pictures, doing reviews, and finding stories, I want to create a type of business directory of each community I visit. Some might ask, “Why are you re-inventing the wheel?” Which is a good point. We have Google for that not mention most Chamber of Commerce's have some sort of online directory. My response:
Google does a fine job, heck, their name is in the title of this blog. But they are a massive company, and they are doing it from a global level trying to build downward. If that makes sense. I mean, they send out a car with a camera on it. And they don’t always get it right, I know, after a year doing this, I’ve found many mistakes. I want to go to the actual places, walk in, interact with live people.
Plus, the stories! I’m sure the omni-directional camera on top of the google bug captures some stories but I bet it misses a lot more.
Many Chamber of Commerce really nail their local directory. Ellsworth’s comes to mind, they do a great job. But most are limited in what they do. And in many places, especially in Northern Maine there are no chambers, all the businesses there could use the extra support, IMO.
That’s it for this week. I’m going to start my directory and kick it off with the Mattawamkeag Area. ‘Keag’s my home town so it’s going to be fun. The first group will include the surrounding towns: Medway, Woodville, Chester, Winn, Lee, Springfield, Kingman and Macwahoc.
