Fallout is the sixth Mission: Impossible film. I thought these movies have been getting better and better as the series progresses, although I did this latest jaunt a little tedious and a slower pace compared the Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. I think it was better when his team was constantly getting killed or disappearing. The reality of that kind of offset the “impossibilitiness” (made up word), of the plots, if that makes sense.
The plot goes a bit like this: It’s been two years since Ethan Hunt had successfully captured the terrorist Solomon Lane, the remnants of the Syndicate have formed into another organization called the Apostles. Under the leadership of a mysterious fundamentalist known only as John Lark, the organization is planning on obtaining three plutonium cores. Ethan and his IMF team are sent to Berlin to intercept them, but the mission fails when Ethan chooses to save Luther and the Apostles escape with the plutonium. With CIA agent August Walker joining the team, Ethan and his allies must now find the rogue plutonium cores before it's too late.
Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt. One bit of trivia, I heard somewhere the most successful Cruise films are ones where his character runs in the films. MI6 is no exception, it had a 790 million (so far) box office and Hunt does alot of running. Rounding out the cast is Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin. Not a big fan of Cavill as Superman, but he makes a fine bad/good/medium guy (no spoilers) in this movie.
Written and Directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Produced by Cruise and J.J. Abrahams (who has apparently built an empire on reboots/re-imaginings, which is ok, but I wish he would do more original stuff like Lost and Cloverfield.
The action scenes, the stunts and pacing are all on par with the others. The H.A.L.O stunt and the Men's Room fight scene were particularly good. The story was just a little lacking for me. If you like spy/action films, your mission if you choose to accept is to seek out Mission Impossible Fallout and relax for 2 plus hours. I gave this entry 4 out of 5 reels.
