A Brief History of Mattawamkeag up to 1900 by C.B. O'Hara Jr
The Village of Mattawamkeag lies in a valley at the Juncture of Mattawamkeag and Penobscot Rivers. The town gets its name from the river, and according to an authority on Indian names Mattawamkeag means “river with many rocks in its mouth.” CLICK TO CONTINUE >
What does the name "Mattawamkeag" mean?
Mattawamkeag is a small community located in Penobscot County, Maine, it is centrally located where the Mattawamkeag River joins the Penobscot River. The name comes from the indigenous people who once had a nomadic settlement on the corner of land formed by both rivers. The meaning is varied depending on who you talk to. Some sources say, "At the raised gravel bar", “The River with many rocks at it’s mouth” or “Where the two Rivers Meet”... The third one is on the town’s sign but the actual meaning may be lost in time. Unlike many other Maine towns, which changed Native American names to something European flavored, Mattawamkeag kept it's original name or at least a translation. Mattawamkeag is an interesting town with a rich history that will be explored in the space in the future.
